Young people are a challenge to understand and deal with in every society. Most societies draw the line linking the children and adults at the age of 18years. The line is general and it is not possible to tell whether the child has matured or not. Some mature early while others take longer to mature as late as 25 years. As such, most societies do not have in place tough punishments for these young people and hence they tend to think that society is lenient which might lead to increased crime rates.

Young adults should be punished through imprisonment to ensure that they completely avoid committing a crime. Whenever they realize that the law is taking their actions seriously, they are likely to change and keep away from crime. However, it is important to understand the prime purpose of the prison. It should never be a place for punishment as such, but instead a place that aims at retraining the individual to live well with society. It is therefore important to consider imprisonment of the youths not like a way of punishing them but counselling. According to the psychologists, if prisons become punishing centres, the situation may worsen since the prisoner will at one time come back to the society and they might have leant a lot of tactics from other prisoners.

It is paramount to ensure that whenever youths are taken to prison, a psychologist should be incorporated in the system to guide and counsel these prisoners. Make them better people so that even after leaving prisons for the home they will have turned away from the crime life. The law society should not ignore the fact that some of these young people are not mentally mature, they may not be in a position to make rational decisions. Thus punishing them harshly without counselling would cause more harm than good. The punishment should not be lenient but should be a form of rehabilitation.
