Case study Julie is a receptionist at a restaurant. Much of her work involves using a telephone to take messages, reservation and redirect calls to other section. Julie regularly uses a computer to make appointments, record messages and respond to emails. After working at reception for eight months, Julie found she was leaving work with an aching shoulder and neck, and with sore eyes and a headache. Julie talked about the problems with her manager, who decided to review how computers were used in reception. As an employer, you must protect your workers from the health risks of working with display screen equipment (DSE), such as PCs, laptops, tablets and smartphones. The Health and Safety (Display Screen Equipment) Regulations apply to workers who use DSE daily, for an hour or more at a time.
