Racial discrimination has been common in the United States of America, affecting many citizens since the time immigrants settled in the currently. Currently, racism has taken different forms and reached different levels where government officers who are supposed to protect the citizens and prevent discrimination are participating and supporting it. A recent example was where President Trump referred to coronavirus as the Chinese virus, which affected the relationship between whites and Americans of Asian origin. California has received different types of racism cases involving the police, and as a result, the surrounding community has been divided based on race (Winant 2017). The division among the community members has created tension. If it is not addressed, it can result in a civil war that is not suitable for the economic development of the country and can result in massive loss of life and property during the civil war.

 

Statement of the problem

The racial gap is the main challenge affecting the community because it has a direct impact on the well-being of the community. The racial gap is a problem that needs to be addressed because it contributes to inequalities being witnessed in the community, such as the poverty level, access to quality medical care, access to high-quality jobs, and the level of crime rates. Therefore, the racial gap is a concern that has to be addressed because it contributes to stagnation in economic development and increased conflict and crimes due to discrimination concerns.

When the racial gap and discrimination based on race is high, then conflicts level is usually high because each group will have to devise ways of protecting its interest to reduce the impact of oppression. As a result of the action from a specific race, it stimulates retaliation from the other group, which increases tension based on race within the same community, and that provides a wrong working and living environment. Therefore, living the issue unsolved has a more negative impact on the community in general.

The objectives of the project:

· To determine how racism impacts the lives of the members of the community in California.

· To determine alternative intervention of addressing the challenge of racism in California.

 

The prevalence of widening racial gap in California.

He was murdered by the police in what was described as an application of justice in a discriminatory manner by basing anger on race because the officer was white. Still, George Floyd a black, but they were all operating in the same community. The incident created tension within the community and the surroundings of California (Bolsover 2020). The community has also been affected by the current increase in racism because of the spread of the coronavirus. Following the speech of President Trump, where he posted on his Twitter, referring to coronavirus as a Chinese virus, the racial gap between the white Americans and Native Americans of Asian origin widened. The population of African America in California is estimated at 6% compared to other races within the community, but 16% of all the arrests are African Americans (Brown 2019). The proportion of Africa American in those undergoing state probations constitute 26%, in jail, they account for 25%, and those in prison accounts for 29%. Therefore, from the statistics, it is clear that currently in California, the rate of the racial gap is high where all the wrongdoing activities are being reflected by African Americans as compared to other races, which means that there is a lot that has to be made to bring equality among all the traces living within the society.

The prevalence of the racial gap within the community is evident in the education system, where the most significant percentage of African-American Californians have some faculty education. Proper interaction will help understand the real cause of the current widening of the racial gap and the best alternative ways of solving the problem.

There are multiple civil societies within the community that can support those people who face racial discrimination by airing their voice despite their position in the organization as well as their financial status (Birchal 2020). The existence of these lobby groups is essential because it helps ensure that those who are unable to communicate and air their views are covered and supported in case of court cases. After all, civil groups are managed by activists who help champion the rights of the less fortunate group within the society.

The existence of government agencies responsible for ensuring social justice within the community makes it easier for the implementation process of solving the issue lively and effectively. The presence of courts in the area makes it possible for those who are found guilty of promoting racism are convicted and charged based on their wrongdoing.

Despite the majority of people identifying police agencies as the leading group implementing and causing racial gap widening, there are structures in place where when all the policies are enforced, and it will ensure that the police are at the forefront of eliminating the challenge of racism which is causing unrest within the community. The resources allocated to the police force, such as ammunition and vehicles used for transportation, are the best resources to be used in the way of promoting peace and campaigns against racism.

 

The impact of racism on the community members

When the problem of the widening gap between people of a different race is not addressed, then community members are going to be impacted negatively by paying the consequences of the action. Because of unfair treatment and discrimination, it results in tension and conflict among community members hence creating discomfort among community members because of lack of trust where each member views each other as an enemy. They try all the possible means to eliminate the enemy, which makes it hard for the leadership of the community to maintain peace in such a society.  Considering that stability is essential for economic development, then the widening gap based on race will affect the disposable income of the individuals negatively; hence there is a need for an urgent resolution mechanism to be implemented.

The high number of racism cases within the community provides a lousy picture of the residents within the community at the international level, which affects the international relationships that community members may have, especially in countries that do not support racism at all. An example is where members own businesses and companies within the society. When such cases of racism happen, the larger population that is in support of equality among all races may decide to boycott the products and services that are owned by community members who are perceived to support the idea of racism. Activities such as the boycott of the products and services have a direct impact on the disposable income of the citizens because the production level will reduce, which affects wage rate and employment opportunities for community members.

When the prevalence level of racism is high, then the probability of interpersonal conflict is high because one race will be viewing another race as an enemy that receives all the resources at their expense and will lead to retaliation and payback that require immediate control measures to prevent it from escalating into civil war hence affecting most of the activities that are aimed at improving the lives of community members.

Having a wider gap of racism through an increase in the number of racism incidences, people start organizing themselves and contacting different activities based on their race as a unit of identity, which results in unequal distribution of wealth among other families depending on the side of the association because with the challenge of racism members are helped based on the race they belong which leads to one race benefitting a lot on the available resources at the expense of the minority race which will have limited ability to utilize the available resources. Therefore, the disadvantaged group members are most likely to be impacted by high poverty levels, making it hard for them to support their families.

When parents, guardians, or those who provide for the family are not able to get the opportunity of earning to support their family, they end up engaging in criminal activities such as theft and participating in illegal business such as drug trafficking Mishchuk, Samoliuk, Bilan & Streimikiene, 2018). Therefore, to support community members and ensure that the level of security in the community is improved, it is essential to address the racism that is causing division among community members based on age.

The problem of widening the race gap has also impacted the education system where people are favored in the education system based on race, especially in schools dominated by one race. Most schools practice equality in service delivery, but those who are not following the policies and guidelines that require schools to offer education services without discrimination are causing stress to those who are discriminated hence preventing the affected people from getting a high-quality education.

The health service provision of the affected individuals is also affected negatively. With tension between people living in the same society, it is hard for them to share and practice healthcare services with equality. With the level of racism is high, people will be identified based on their skin color, and patients seeking healthcare services will be attended to depending on the race of the medical physician. However, members of the same race would favor each other and discriminate against those who are not of their race.

 

Intervention mechanism

There is a need for a proper awareness campaign to be organized by different lobby groups within the community to educate the members of the society on the importance of working together and treating each other with equality irrespective of their skin color. For the awareness campaign to be successful, there is a need to use different communication channels that will ensure that a large population of people get the message being passed across the recommended medium of communication is the use of newspapers to give the notice to individuals within the social class that usually get information through reading the newspapers (Schwartz, 2020). The second medium is televisions and radios to pass the advertisement on the importance of stopping racisms and its negative impact on the community members and the development of the community at large. The third medium is the use of posters to be raised in streets and along the road so that members of the public and other officials using the street can view the signs and get information on the negative impact of racism and how it is stagnating the economy while increasing the insecurity within the region. Higher performance in an awareness campaign depends on the kind of message being communicated, and there is a need to select the words depending on the type of targeted audience because different audiences have different preferences which need to be addressed.

The second intervention mechanism is to restructure the police force by empowering oversight authority by including members from different races. In case of racism cases, threats arise from the police force; they can be handled with honesty to provide justice (Sherman, 2020). The composition of police officers and other state officers within the community needs to be scrutinized and ensure that it balances members from different races so that the issue of racism can reduce. Officers start addressing the needs of the citizens as one without considering race identity.

There is a need for political leaders to come out publicly and condemn the act of racism that is affecting society. When leaders speak, their followers listen to their ideas. Therefore, it is of importance for leaders to step up and help the community overcome the problem of racism which is ailing the economy as well as threatening a peaceful environment. The pressure needs to start from the president than other state offices, influencing the citizens to emulate what the leaders are doing. As a result, it will be easier to reduce the increased cases of racism incidence within California.

Both government and non-government agencies need to come up with a proper mechanism of empowering the minorities in terms of race so that they can also be able to support their families and engaging in better activities that will help in rectifying the problematic relationship between them and the police officers. In most cases, those of minority races find themselves in a difficult situation because they suspect them engaging in criminal activities such as drug dealings, thefts, and money laundering.
