The excerpt below is from William Hazlitt's "On the Pleasure of Hating" (1826). Read the excerpt carefully. Then write an essay that argues your position on the value—if any—of hatred.

[Without something to hate, we should lose the very spring of thought and action. Life would turn to a stagnant pool, were it not ruffled by the jarring interests, the unruly passions of men. . . . Pure good soon grows insipid, wants variety and spirit. Pain is a bittersweet, which never surfeits. Love turns, with a little indulgence, to indifference or disgust: hatred alone is immortal.

In your response you should do the following: Respond to the prompt with a thesis that may establish a line of reasoning. Select and use evidence to develop and support your line of reasoning. Thesis Statement

  • Although some people might think that hatred is a good thing in this world, history, and experiences have shown us that all decisions and determinations triggered by hate turn into a chain of events of evil and pain.

Evidence

  • A person who commits a hate crime is actually motivated by hatred for his victims.
  • In Puerto Rico recently a transgender named Neulisa Alexa Luciano was a victim of a hate crime, triggered by a homophobic person that was triggered by hatred.
  • Scenario: A man's child is killed by someone who hated the man, obviously the parent hates the person who committed the crime and wants something in return for revenge. This whole scenario creates a chain of events of evil and pain created by hate.
  • Scenario: A person is being bullied by a group of people and he or she begins to hate that group of people. While time passes hate becomes more powerful than her and made her kill that group of people. The parents of those people want revenge on the family of the bullied person because of the murders.
  • Without hatred, none of this pain and violence can occur if people look for forgiveness and peace among themselves and others.
