The following is a partial list of topics that will likely be on the final exam. In addition to these items, exam questions will be derived from lectures, textbook (chapter reading and glossary), power points, assigned readings, and guest’s lecturers. A number of possible essay/short answer questions are also listed below. 2-3 of these essay questions will be presented on the final exam. In order to do well, students must study from all sources. This includes outside readings.
· General information about the airline, rail travel, motor coach, rental car, and cruise industries. Growth, number of travelers, largest carriers, growth/declines, trends, etc.
· Be able to define the different types of tourism organizations.
· Be able to recognize and understand the different types of hospitality related services offered to tourist. What are their roles, how are they interconnected?
· General information about hotel industry and related industries (e.g. travel agencies, tour operators, receptive operators, etc.). Growth areas, number of guests, largest brands, trends, etc.
· How has the Internet impacted the travel agency industry?
· Know what the GDS and its role in the travel industry.
· Tourist travel motivators and travel needs model (Pearce, 1993).
· Trends and general information about attractions. Growth areas, number of guests, trends, etc.
· Know the different types of recreation facilities available to tourists and general statistics (e.g., national parks, winter sports, etc.) and review the impact these have on travel and tourism.
· Tourist behaviors that are impacted life characteristics of travelers
· Reasons thee are resentments by local people toward tourist
· Stanley Plog’s (1974, 2001) model
· What role do California Parks play in the history of California tourism?
· Be familiar with the different type of tourism organizations and their role in the business of tourism.
· Understand and be able to explain the different types of tourism (e.g., recreational, social, mass, culinary, business, etc.)
· What are the future trends of tourism and the tourist?
Essay/Short Answer Questions
· Define Cultural and heritage tourism and give 3-5 examples.
· Describe why resentments by local people toward tourists may occur and give 2-3 examples.
· In the lecture materials, we discuss McGehee, et al's. (1996), Push vs Pull Motivational Factors. Please 1) define these factors and 2) discuss why these are important contributions of psychological theory to the understanding of travel motivations.
· In the lecture materials, we discuss Stanley Plog's (1974), theory on why destination areas rise and fall in popularity. Your answer must consist of three parts. Please 1) define both personality types (psychocentric & allocentric) and 2) provide 2-3 examples of each personality travel pattern; 3) give 2-3 destination examples of the two psychographic positions of destinations.
· As per our lecture materials, define "Opaque" pricing and give 2-3 examples.
· According to the textbook, there are four (4) urgent transportation problems that affect tourism. Please 1) list and 2) describe the four problems.
· Please define a "Tour Wholesaler" and give 3-4 examples of what they do.
· Goeldner and Ritchie (2012) describe the tourism supply components in their textbook. List and describe the four broad categories discussed in their textbook.
· Define "tourism policy" and list the three areas tourism policies typically address.
The Exam will also cover a comprehensive approach to ALL the outside readings list on the course syllabus. Please be prepared to answer questions pertaining to those readings.
