Example 1

Hi class,

I found this article by John Hopkins that discusses how low serotonin transporters may be causing dementia other than being an outcome of dementia. I found this information useful to know since most of us will be working with the geriatric population in the hospital setting, so we should know why a physician may prescribe selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors or be prescribed a medication that can increase the production of serotonin neurotransmitters to the geriatric population with dementia. To sum up the article, a study was conducted on participants who are showing early signs of memory decline in which the researchers found less serotonin transporters in participants with early signs of memory decline compared to people with no cognitive decline by analyzing the brain scans of the participants. The researchers also conducted a study analyzing the impact serotonin transporter levels has on memory ability by conducting a memory test on participants with a mild decline in cognition and participants with no decline. When comparing the results of the amount of serotonin transporters and the score on the memory test, there was a positive relationship between the two variables meaning that the more serotonin transporters someone had, the higher their memory score was on average. Using this information, we as future nurses can find ways to help boost a patient's serotonin levels to help prevent further cognitive decline (unless contraindicated) such as recommending foods that boost serotonin such as salmon or promoting sleep.

Example 2

Hi class,

I found this article useful as it stresses the importance of peer interaction and collaboration among nursing students. Because healthcare is a demanding profession, therefore health care givers especially the nurses need access to any tools and resources available to ensure positive patient outcomes. Nursing students can leverage peer interaction whereby they can discuss about issues they are likely to face during clinical experience.

Having a support system is crucial to ensuring a smooth transition to the workplace upon completion of their studies.

Nursing students will have the ability to communicate and express whatever challenges they are facing; they will be able to initiate and maintain helpful relationships with each other. Their understanding and appreciation of the need to reflect and assess one’s strengths and weaknesses, and how collaborating with others can be a strength mirrors the importance of investing in social and relational skills. Through collaboration, students will be able to acquire knowledge about, for instance, disease processes or how to manage infections within the clinical setting. Peer collaboration, therefore, will be helpful toward enabling students to accommodate not only the views of others, but also invest in academic relationship building.
