(i) A factory is buying computerized systems and robots to handle many tasks, meaning fewer laborers will be needed. The company needs people to run the new equipment but wants to hire new workers who already have computer skills. Is the company obligated to keep the old workers with no computer skills and train them to use the equipment?
In this modern era technology is evolving at a very high pace. Everything is going digital and demand for fast and robust system is increasing. In order to stay in business, companies/factories need to update their system to cope up with the demand and supply. Buying robots to handle tasks is not a wrong decision. Also, the company is not obliged to keep the old workers with no computer skills, but the company should give its workers an option to learn the computer skills and the company should train all the workers that are willing to take the training. It will be beneficial to the company as well because all those old workers know the core values of the company, and they understand the workflow better as compare to a new worker. And in case of emergency or system failure, these old workers can manage the work until the system is fixed.
(ii) Are old workers obligated to learn these new skills if they want to keep their jobs?
A good worker is the one that provides benefits to the company and adds value. As the factory is updating their workflow and installing robots to handle tasks, so it is necessary for the workers to learn new skills to perform their duties. So the old workers must learn these new skills if they want to keep their job.
