Smartphones have become essential devices in today's technological world, mainly when employees use them at work or at home. One advantage of smartphones in the workplace is that it improves time management and efficiency because they can work anywhere. The usage of smartphones in the workplace leads to improved communication which positively impacts production. However, organizations should limit the use of smartphones during office hours. This is due to the fact that most workers are addicted and spend most of the time texting, playing games and listening to music. This negatively affects performance at the workplace may lead to immediate dismissal of lower productivity and a poor reputation.

Employees at times use their smartphones to play games at work, which further reduces the hours of productive work. These practice is mainly done when employees get bored or are tired [ CITATIONWah14 11033 ].Researchers at San Diego University led by Veronica Galvan found out that smartphone use has decreases productivity. Establishing short breaks between working hours where the employees can use their smartphones to call or text their friends will ensure they are more focused when they get back to work. Smartphones are essential devices in the workplace; however, measures that prevent employees' distraction from their work should be enforced to allow workplace  concentration.

Smartphone addiction is one of the negative consequences associated with prolonged use of smartphones in the workplace. According to Li and Lin (2019), workers who have become severely dependent on their smartphones have a hard time psychologically detaching themselves from their smartphones. Such employees tend to develop high stress and severe anxiety because of the effects related to smartphone anxiety (Li & Lin, 2019). Therefore, smartphones pose a risk to the emotional and psychological wellbeing of the employees. Optimum performance requires perfect mental health among the employees (LaMontagne et al., 2014). Therefore, the stress and severe anxiety that is brought about by smartphone addiction hurt workplace productivity.

The lack of productivity may lead to dismissals and therefore cause the organization to register high employee turnover. Iqbal (2010) indicates that employee turnover has negative cost implications for the organization, such as recruitment, selection, and training costs. There are also costs related to production. There are other intangible costs due to dismissals such as reputation, performance disruption, and increased workload on the other employees (Iqbal, 2010). All these factors can stem from smartphone addiction. Therefore, it is imperative to tame smartphone addiction because the organization may have to spend extra money to fire and hire new employees while experiencing a damaged reputation.
