When it comes to a child's success at school it does take a community meaning everyone working together and helping that child to maintain. With ELL students they need a little more help so they do not get confused. At home they are speaking their native language while at school they are being asked to communicate in their second language which is English. A relationship has to be formed between the teachers and parents. This way they are beginning to link to the child's background getting to know them and where they are coming from. This link comes in handy in the classroom during class discussions because you are able use sources the children can relate to.
Now that you have formed a bond and can communicate with the family the English can be practiced at home as well. The parents can help by learning a little English and helping their children by using both languages to explain things or objects. This helps to build the child s vocabulary and speaking. They can also use videos to help students translate words and pictures of things. Then if the child is struggling to have the parents come and observe and follow up with a meeting. This is how i would the partnership throughout the school year.
