The Five Principles of Management Applied to Language Barriers
Management is an essential role to any organization that desires to operate an efficient
establishment for employees and patients. Without this role, there would be no one in authority
which would lead to a dysfunctional department. There would be no practiced system or a
unified goal with a reliable team of staff members. To be successful in a managerial position,
there are five key principles that one must follow: find the problem, organize to solve, clarify the
problem/process, understand the sources of variation, and solutions. These five principles of
management are also known as FOCUS (McWay, 2013).
To understand the situation at hand, the management staff has to understand the problem
that is being addressed. Investigate how this is an issue and how it is affecting patients and
healthcare staff. After the issue at hand can be understood, it is important to understand the cause
and effect that this issue imposes. This can be completed by organizing details and research.
After gathering the key details, one can now clear how the problem can become a trickle effect
throughout affected areas. With this, the management staff can understand the sources of
variation. Some types of variation can be biological, environmental, and operational factors
(Ashford University Staff, 2019). When these sources are researched and understood,
management can then apply them to the issue to further gain knowledge on areas that need more
focus than the others in order to reach a resolution. Finally, a solution can be made to either
eliminate or reduce the impact of the caused issue. This may not please all members of the
healthcare facility but it can help reduce the impact an issue can make.
In the meeting scenario that contained language barriers, there are two of the five
principles of management that can be addressed in order to meet a resolution. Since we already
know the situation at hand, there is no need to continue with the first step. Instead, the two

practiced principles for this case should be understanding the sources of variation or solutions
and conducting the solution. Given there are about 20 different languages spoken within the
organization, it is appropriate to address each language to make it easier for the staff members to
operate efficiently.
