For your final assignment this week, you will create a hybrid recording-studio flow chart, including analog front end, DAW, digital DAW controller, and set up for a professional session. You are doing a bass overdub session. You will record both direct and miked amp signal. The studio elements and signal chain are as follows:

  • Fender Jazz Bass (measured 6.8k output impedance @ 100 Hz)

  • Avalon U5 Mono Instrument DI

  • Fender Vintage Reissue '59 Bassman 50W bass amp

  • AKG D112 and Senheiser MD421 at cabinet grill

SPL meter reads 100 dB at the grill.

Output from Avalon DI: -52 dBV

You will be recording each mic to its own track. Assume that all gain stages other than the mic pres are set at unity gain.

Components:

  • True Precision 8 Mic preamps

  • Avid 192 HD analog I/O

  • Avid C24 Controller

  • Dynaudio BM12A Speakers (Sensitivity: 85 dB SPL @ 1 m for -18dBu)

Control Room and Headphone volume set to -30 dB.

Please submit a detailed signal flow chart of this session set up, including each connection and audio stage with level, both individual and master. Determine the gain needed from each mic preamp to output +6 dBV. Refer to the spec sheets for each of these elements for sensitivities, impedances, etc.
