You have signed a contract to build a garage for the Simpsons. You will receive $500 bonus for completing the project within 17 working days. The contract also contains a penality clause in which you will lose $100 for each day the project takes longer than 17 working days. Draw a project network given the information below. Complete the forward and backward pass, compute the activity slack, and identify the critical path. Do you expect to receive a bonus or a penalty on this project? The given table in the question seems have an error in the predecessor column. The predecessor task cannot be the same as the current task. By logic, predecessor to Task B must be Task A and all other predecessors must be shifted one row below what they are being shown. The corrected table is as under:
The task duration is shown in the middle of the bottom row of each node below the description. Forward pass results in the numbers shown as Early Start and Early Finish in the top row of each node besides the task ID. Early start is 0 for first task and early finish = duration + early start. For the next task, the early start will be the early finish of the preceding task.
Passing on till the final task, we get 17 days as the Early Finish for the final task.
In the back ward pass, Late Finish is taken to the Early Finish of the final task. Late Start = Late Finish - Duration. Passing to the preceding task, the Late Finish will be the Late Start of the next task. Continuing on, we get a back ward pass of 0 days for the Late Start of the first task.
The Slack is shown in the middle row of each node next to the description. Slack is calculated as Late Start - Early Start or Late Finish - Early Finish.
The critical path is marked in red font. All the task nodes which have a slack of 0 forms the critical path. The critical path here is A, B, C, D, G, H, J and K
Since the project completion is 17 days as per critical path, there is no bonus nor penalty applicable.
P.S: if the network diagram is to be prepared based in the erroneous data, it would be as under:
