Position Title: Firefighter I 

Supervisory Level: Front-line non-exempt (hourly) employee—no supervisory duties 

Reports To: Battalion Chief 

 

Position Description: 

• Search burning buildings to locate fire victims. Rescue victims from burning buildings, accident sites, and water hazards. 

• Administer first aid and cardiopulmonary resuscitation to injured persons. 

• Respond to fire alarms and other calls for assistance, such as wildfires, automobile fires, and industrial accidents. Assess fires and situations and report conditions to superiors to receive instructions, using two-way radios. 

• Construct and patrol fire lines to locate and extinguish burning materials, sparks, and flareups that may threaten developed fire lines. 

• Create openings in buildings for ventilation or entrance, using axes, chisels, crowbars, electric saws, or core cutters. 

• Drive and operate fire fighting vehicles and equipment. 

• Collaborate with police to respond to accidents, disasters, and fire investigation calls. 

• Inspect fire sites after flames have been extinguished to ensure that there is no further danger. Take action to contain hazardous chemicals that might catch fire, leak, or spill. Protect property from water and smoke, using waterproof salvage covers, smoke ejectors, and deodorants. 

• Lay hose lines and connect them to water supplies. Select and attach hose nozzles, depending on fire type, and direct streams of water or chemicals onto fires. Operate pumps connected to high-pressure hoses. 

• Position and climb ladders to gain access to upper levels of buildings, or to rescue individuals from burning structures. 

• Spray foam onto runways, extinguish fires, and rescue aircraft crew and passengers in air-crash emergencies. 

• Prepare written reports that detail specifics of fire incidents. 

• Inform and educate the public on fire prevention. 

• Clean and maintain fire stations and fire-fighting equipment and apparatus. 

• Inspect buildings for fire hazards and compliance with fire prevention ordinances, testing and checking smoke alarms and fire suppression equipment as necessary. 

• Establish fire lines to prevent unauthorized persons from entering areas near fires. 

• Participate in fire drills and demonstrations of fire-fighting techniques; courses, seminars and conferences, and study fire science literature, to learn firefighting techniques. 

• Participate in physical training activities to maintain a high level of physical fitness. 

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: 

• The ability to speak, read and write in English; bilingual, especially Spanish-speaking skills, highly desirable. 

•  Knowledge of current fire ordinances. 

•  Knowledge of fire suppression techniques and safe use of firefighting apparatus and equipment. 

•  Ability to safely operate a vehicle. 

•  Knowledge of first aid, CPR, safety procedures, and use of safety equipment. 

•  Ability to use communications equipment. 

•  Ability to use a computer and basic keyboarding skills. 

•  Physical abilities include: 

-  Running upstairs, carrying 75 pounds of required gear. 

-  Lift and carry in excess of 100 pounds frequently (fireman’s carry and shoulder drag). 

-  Passing score on Jackson Strength Evaluation, to include leg power and strength (measured by vertical jump, hang time, weightlifting); arm strength. 

-  80 pushups, completed at a required pace. 

•  Ability to legally work in the United States. 

 

Education, Experience and Certifications: 

•  High school diploma or equivalent. 

•  Two years of experience in firefighting or completion of Associates degree in Fire Science. 

•  Valid U.S. driver’s license with a maximum of one moving violation in the last 3 years. 

•  Remain drug-free on and off the job (drugs are defined as illegal substances and unauthorized use of prescription drugs); no prior convictions involving illegal substances or alcohol. 

•  Possession of EMT certification or ability to complete certification during fire academy training. 

•  Proof of legal right to work in the United States (documents outlined on I-9 form). 

 

Physical Requirements: 

The job requires physical activities involving movement of the whole body, such as standing, kneeling, climbing, lifting, running, walking, and stooping, often over uneven or mountainous terrain. The activities often also require considerable use of the arms and legs, such as in the physical handling of people, objects, and operation of equipment. The employee may be required to lift, drag, or restrain heavy objects (in excess of 100 pounds) daily. The job may require the ability to work in enclosed and compact spaces, often in dim lighting.  

 

Work Environment: 

Work occurs partly outdoors and exposes the employee to heat, cold, smoke, dust, moisture, wind, and direct sunlight. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently exposed to extreme heat, contaminants and a variety of hazardous conditions and equipment, objects, people, animals, and vehicles. Driving in hazardous conditions such as rain, snow, ice, at night, in heavy traffic, on uneven terrain, and at high speeds is necessary. The noise level in the work environment is moderate to high.
