Week 6: Professional Credentialing and the Assessment Report
Consider Mr. Edward, the individual interviewed in the media from Week 3 titled Interviewing Techniques. Imagine that you are the addictions professional charged with counseling Mr. Edward. Consider what professional credentials in your state, province, or locale you would need to have before you would be allowed to begin his assessment and eventual treatment, and why.
Now imagine that you have taken Mr. Edward through the assessment process and have collected data on his referral information, background, and history. What are the final elements you would include in a summative report in order to provide recommendations for Mr. Edward’s future treatment? How might you transform observations about his behavior—such as jiggles foot nervously throughout the interview or makes sarcastic jokes—into a written report that will eventually lead to successful treatment? What other referrals might be needed to help Mr. Edward attain a future free of addiction?
In this final week of the course, you research and analyze criteria for a professional practice in addictions professions. You then synthesize findings in the assessment report you began in Week 5. Finally, you explore diagnostic categories related to substance disorders, in particular those in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fourth Edition, Text Revision and in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fifth Edition.
Congratulations on finishing Addictions Assessment!

An archer would not shoot an arrow without first looking and taking aim at the target. Similarly, it is important to have an aim in mind when pursuing a career in addictions counseling. Becoming familiar with certification and licensing criteria in your locale is necessary in preparing to be a counselor of almost any type. Credentialing, including certification and licensing, attempts to ensure that addictions professionals meet criteria and competencies and have a core knowledge base and set of skills established by respected regulatory agencies. As of 2012, there was no one national or international agency providing credentialing of addictions counselors, but many agencies and organizations offer counseling certification. For example, organizations such as the International Association for Addictions and Offender Counselors, the International Certification Reciprocity Consortium, and the Association for Addictions Professionals all have developed certification programs for addictions professionals.
For this week’s Discussion, you research the criteria for a practicing addictions professional in your state, province, or locale. You then consider what competencies you have and need toward meeting these criteria.
To prepare:
· Select one addictions profession.
· From what you have learned throughout this course, consider what competencies you have gained for certification and licensing for this chosen addictions profession.
· Research criteria in your state, province, or locale for certification for this chosen addictions profession.
Post a brief description of requirements for certification and licensure in your state, province, or locale for the addictions profession you chose. Then, describe one competency you believe you have developed as part of your participation in this course and one competency you believe you need to develop to work as a professional in the field of addiction.
Respond to at least one of your colleagues’ postings in one or more of the following ways:
· Respond to someone who selected a different profession; compare the certification and licensing requirements in your state, province, or locale for that profession.
· Respond to someone from a different state, province, or locale who chose the same profession you did; compare the certification and licensing requirements in the two states and/or provinces.
· Recommend a different type of addictions profession a colleague might consider.
· Expand on a colleague’s statement about competencies.

Week 6 Discussion
The summary and recommendations section of an assessment report is where all of the relevant information, insights, and data come together. Rather than being a finishing point, this report and these recommendations become a living document that ultimately will help an individual continue to forge a path free from addiction.
Parts 1 and 2 of this assessment report provide an introduction to the skills required for good report writing. For most locales, requiring licensing and credentialing, additional coursework, and experience is needed to better develop report writing competency.
Appendix 3 in the course text will give you the basics about the DSM-IV-TR and how substance use disorders are diagnosed. In the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (5th ed.), the appendix titled “Highlights of Changes from DSM-IV to DSM-5” illustrates the changes in Substance-Related and Addictive Disorders made in the DSM-5. Do not forget to look back over past readings, because this Assignment will involve other professionals (people to whom you might want to refer the client) in addition to a summary of the most critical parts of what you believe is going on with this client.
