Option #1:

Define and discuss the following concepts: prejudice, stereotype, discrimination and institutional racism.   Use your textbook , video and audio clips in your course materials, and your observations from daily life to provide examples of each (Observations can include interpersonal interactions with friends, family, and so on; in the media--TV, internet, music, magazines, newspapers; professional settings, etc.) What is the difference between these concepts? How are these concepts related?

Option #2

Discuss the controversy surrounding the definition and use of the term “race.” What are some of the problems with the way that we, as a society, define race? Is this a meaningful concept in which people can be identified? Do we need to continue to use this concept? Why? Why not?

Describe at least 3 goals of the civil rights movement since 1950. What kind of political and social change was sought in the 1960s? What type of social change is sought today? How have the goals of the civil rights movement changed over time? Are there any goals that have not changed?   For this essay, review the civil rights timeline and interview with Black Lives Matter activists that are posted in your course materials.
