Aside from the Jews, Nazi targeted other groups that were viewed as a threat to the German race. In 1939, the German government established the Euthanasie Programme. The headquarters of the operation were at Tiergartenstrasse 4, thus the name T-4.

For Hitler, government intervention to segregate the races, to promote the reproduction of those with the "best" characteristics, to prevent the reproduction of those with inferior characteristics, and to prepare for wars of expansion brought the German nation in line with its natural, biologically determined instinct to survive.

The Nazis decided that it was a waste of time and money to support the disabled. During the Euthanasie Programme, thousands of people with various handicaps were considered useless and put to death like dogs and cats. Germans with mental and physical disabilities were considered a liability on German society and the state. Approximately 250,000 people were killed in the so-called cleansing program.
