  1. Two people are trying to push a box from opposite sides. One person is applying a force of 600N to the right, and the other is applying a force of 1000N to the left. If the mass of the box is 10kg, what is the acceleration of the box? (Be sure to include the direction of the acceleration in your answer)

From Newton's second law of motion

R = ma

R is the resultant force on the object

m is the mass of the object which is 10kg

a is the acceleration which is unknown

Since we have to opposite forces of different magnitude, the magnitude of the resultant will be

1000 - 600 = 400N

And the direction will be towards that of the 1000N force (left)

By substituting the parameters, we have that

400 = 10a

a = 400/10

a = 40 m/s^2

Acceleration is 40 m/s^2 towards the left
