provide a substantive response to your peer. Review their comments regarding their chosen works of art. What additional implications could be considered in determining if the work of art is an example of representational art, abstract art, or non-representational art? What additional questions would you recommend asking about the works of art? Why?
PEER RESPONSE:
Provide the title of the work, the name of the artist, the date the work was created, and the place the work was created.
The artwork I selected for this discussion is titled ‘Saint Michael triumphant over the Devil with the Donor Antoni Joan’. The painting was created by the artist Bartolomé Bermejo in 1468.
Identify the stylistic period or movement of your work of art.
The painting was created during the Renaissance 1400–1600.
Drawing from the chapters in the textbook, the Art Identifying Movements (Links to an external site.) interactive, and your credible source, discuss what elements (subject, style, materials, etc.,) in the work are evidence of the work’s stylistic period or movement.
Renaissance was characterized by realism, attention to detail, and precise study of human anatomy. Artists used linear perspective and created depth through intense lighting and shading. Characteristics of these styles are evident in the painting.
Identify whether your work of art is an example of representational art, abstract art, or non-representational art. What elements of this work are evidence of the work’s type?
This was a tough question. The website drawpaintacademy.org defines representational art as, “Representational art refers to art which represents something, whether that be a tree in a landscape, apple in a still life, or figure in a portrait. Or in other words, it is art which is clearly identifiable as something which already exists in life” (2019). Now, depending on your beliefs you might not consider angels and demons as something that exist in real life. Yet, angels represent a celestial being that looks like a human. Considering this I decided to classify the painting as representational art.
