  1. Article

Pager, Devah; Bruce Western; and Bart Bonikowski. 2009. “Discrimination in a Low-Wage Labor Market: A Field Experiment” American Sociological Review 74: 777-799.

  1. Research Question

In the article, Pager and his colleagues investigated the contemporary racial discrimination among the low-wage labor market. The primary research question is ‘Does employer discrimination affect labor outcome of low-wage workers?’.

  1. Research/Theories Discussed

To answer the research questions, matching theory by Heckman and Siegelman, 1993 have been used. The theory states that the results of a test rely on the comparability of the tester. The wage variance between different races have been examined in addition to th interaction between job seekers and employers. The main goal is to examine the relationship between the employer and job seekers to help come up with decisions that lower the opportunities for minority job seekers.

  1. Research Design

Descriptive research design was used in the research. An experimental study was carried out by sending a group of testers to seek employment in New York City. The testers were from different races which are whites, blacks and Latinos.

  1. Key Findings

Black job seekers had half the chance of getting a response after application. White applicants had the highest chance of getting positive responses compared to blacks and Latinos. The results indicate that a systemic type of discrimination defines the employment opportunities for minority groups.

  1. Value/Shortcoming of the Research

The study provides new insights on how the race of job seekers influence the perception by employers and thus affect employment opportunities.

The research is limited to advertised job opportunities which cover approximately 25-30% of jobs. Different strategies such as employment agencies, referrals and walk in applications may provide different results.

This is the instructor comment on the outline. Please make sure to follow what the instructor says:

You have made a start, but you should probably read the article before you write your final review (due next week) - I think you probably just skimmed it. For #3, the literature review section that much research suggests that the reason for the Black-white labor market gap in employment and wages is due to "skill deficiencies" and in #4 you need to explain how their experiment worked.”
