2) Discuss laying the foundation for scientific evidence. What are 'the' three questions and how are each
answered with what information? Create one example that addresses all aspects of this topic- work through
the process of laying the foundation.
The questions are: were the scientific tests on the evidence valid? Was the equipment used on the evidence accurate? And finally, was the evidence analyzed by an individual with qualifications to do so? The first question about the scientific tests and methods being used is answered by proving the scientific method that was used to analyze the evidence. For this method to be accepted in court, it must be widely accepted by the scientific community as a reliable method for analyzing that certain type of evidence. Similarly to proving the tests used on the evidence, proving that the equipment used to analyze the evidence is important to ensure that the evidence was not altered during the tests. This is done by explaining all equipment and items used while analyzing the evidence and proving that it is generally accepted in the scientific community as being 'safe' for evidence. Lastly, proving the individual who analyzed the evidence was qualified to do so. This is done by the individual who analyzed the evidence providing their education and employment history to prove that they have the experience and qualifications with the specific method that was being used. An example of all of these questions being answered would be about testing a DNA sample. The DNA sample has been analyzed using the Polymerase chain reaction method, which is one of the most commonly used and widely accepted DNA test. A DNA amplifier is used to conduct the test, which is the accepted machine used for testing DNA samples using the PCR method. These tests are conducted by a DNA analyst who has completed a Master's degree and all specific training related to DNA analysis and has certificates proving that they have been trained in PCR DNA testing using the DNA amplifier machine.
