Torture is not effective. Though it can lead to suspects providing information, this information is likely not reliable if it was only accessible during torture methods. These individuals will likely provide information that is not accurate in an attempt to stop the torture and still ensure information about their guilt or information that could implicate others is left unknown. Due to the strong possibility of obtaining misinformation, the end result does not justify the means used to obtain the information. Even if the information obtained is accurate, the means are still not justified as it is a violation of basic human rights. Police should not use immoral actions to gain information. This can greatly impact the trust that communities have for law enforcement and reverse all effort that has been placed into community based policing to ensure there is a level of respect and trust with law enforcement. These actions are also unconstitutional and if we let these actions occur, more and more unconstitutional behavior will occur and it will become 'accepted' to have the rights of our country's citizens constantly violated.
