In my discussion this week I spoke about artificial intelligence. How would you compare/contrast personalized care and personalized/precision medicine?
In most cases, personalized care and precision medicine are utilized interchangeably, yet they
have differences. According to the National Research Council (2010), personalized medicine
refers to an individualized treatment that suits a definite patient. In contrast, precision medicine
is termed as modifying disease handling and prevention concerning different factors like
environment, genes, and lifestyle of individual people. Precision medicine is more generalizable
to groups of people existing in the same ecological set up who have similarities in their
characteristics, while personalized medicine targets developing treatments for every individual
patient.
While personalized medicine embarks on using data and genomics to develop treatments for
certain groups, precision medicine seeks to establish customized treatments for each distinctive
patient. Bresnick, 2018 supports that the field of artificial intelligence has used computerized
systems that have aided in tailoring drugs that meet every patient's specifications, taking into
consideration every distinctive feature. In terms of benefits, precision medicine is promising in
improving health and healthcare features compared with the less effective personalized care,
which may not apply to all cases. Researchers have devoted efforts in exploiting the promising
precision medicine by utilizing computerized techniques in developing efficient medications that
treat illnesses specific to every individual; on the contrary, they have overlooked the concept of
personalized care, which is amorphous and less reliable.
