What information does an acid or base equilibrium constant give?
Answer:
The acid/base equilibrium constant tells you how much of the acid dissociates into hydrogen ions in solution, or how much base reacts with water to form hydroxide ions in solution. For weak acids, the larger the value, the more hydrogen ions are liberated from the acid and the more acidic an acid becomes. For weak bases, the larger the value, the more base reacts with water to produce more hydroxide ions, making the base more basic.
Strong acids and bases do not have equilibrium constants because they completely dissociate in solution.
