An intergenerational perspective is relevant for a sustainable society because of our interconnected world today. An intergenerational perspective is one that spans multiple generations. As innovations in technology advance, people are living longer lives. By taking on an intergenerational perspective, one can view different concepts such as equity, conflict, cycle of violence, and mobility. Each generation experiences different major events. For example, our grandparent's generation experienced the Vietnam War and our parents experienced 9/11 while we experienced the events of COVID-19. By learning through an intergenerational perspective, we can learn by sharing knowledge and learning from the past as well as the present. As a sustainable society, we can learn from issues of the past and also use this perspective to get a clearer idea on what needs to change. For example, there has been research done on intergenerational patterns of child maltreatment. By viewing things through an intergenerational lens, we may have a better idea of how to fix these issues.
