Discuss the challenges that you see ahead in the next 5 years and beyond for digital forensic examiner
The most challenging aspect faced by both Digital Forensic examiners and the whole Digital Forensic sector in the next years is the rapid increase in technology advancement and evolution of devices. To mention these challenges involves:
- Mobile and IOT devices which uses a wide variety of operating system - the wide variety of operating systems used by mobile and IOT devices nowadays and in the near future makes it difficult for digital examiners to create tools for their analysis and methods to be applied that can support the OS architecture of the device being handled.
- Embedded storage from mobile devices - as I have mentioned earlier the wide variety of OS that can be used by Mobile and ITO devices in the near future make the file system of the embedded storage difficult to analysis since various algorithms and mechanisms are used by different manufacturers.
- Cloud data forensics since the data is scattered all around the globe and may involved jurisdiction during investigations.
- The massive adaptation of Secure Enclave in 64-bit hardware that can be found on Apple devices
- Complexity of encryption used by modern devices - as the technology advances the complexity of encryption also increases since threats evolve at par with security defenses. Encryption algorithms will also evolve to address these security vulnerabilities.
