Here is a sample hypothesis question:

This year a certain high school have 250 new freshmen students. You would like to determine if there are more male students and female students in the batch new students. From the data of your registrar's office, you found out that 131 of the students are male and the rest are female (so you have 119 female students, 250 - 131). At 0.05 level of significance, determine if the proportion of male students are higher than the proportion of female students for this new batch of students.

So you have the null hypothesis as proportion of male students is equal (or less than) the proportion of female students.

Alternative hypothesis (what we really are testing) is proportion of male students is greater than proportion of female students.

You will use z-test for proportion.
