A high number or majority of American families are based on support, love, and caring of family of the family into their system of values. Different demographics defines the make-up of these families. These characteristics include the type of families, the age of marriage, and the average number of children given birth by families. The information on American family demographics is based on ten thousand two hundred and seventy-six different types of households that were involved in the American Community Survey. Nuclear families are the most common, but there are several other households in the United States with a different family set up or structure.

The majority, fifty-four percent, are living with a single parent. Just thirty-eight percent are living with two parents, including twenty-two percent who are living with only two parents and both parents in their first marriage. Furthermore, some nine percent are living with remarried parents and seven percent live with cohabiting parents. The most surprising demographic is the high and rising number of single-parent families and despite the decrease in children living with two parents over the last fifty years, most kids are still being raised in this type of family or living arrangement.
