Obsessive Compulsive Disorder has a combination of psychotherapy and medication treatment. For psychotherapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)can be an option to minimize symptoms and eventually leads to successful treatment of the patient. For CBT, some patients are generally exposed gradually for the things they are fearful and obsessive about which overtime they will develop a resistance to do the things repeatedly. The nurses role is to provide patients safety during the treatment and ensure the patient's well-being. In addition, medication treatment is widely used as well. The most common medications given are antidepressants drugs such as Clomipramine (Anafranil), Fluoxetine (Prozac), Fluvoxamine, Paroxetine (Paxil, Pexeva), Sertraline(Zoloft). The primary nursing responsibility is to educate the patient about the drug, common side-effect, drug interactions, adverse effects, and safety precautions before the medication be started and taper. There is also an increased risk for suicide to patients who are taking antidepressant drugs. It is the nurse responsibility to ensure that the patient understood all the health teachings and risks about the medication.
