The Gantt chart is the chart that is commonly used for planning task or activities while being mindful of the time of each event. One side of the chart shows you the activities and duration of how long each event will be and on the other side displays it by days so the viewer can see how many things take place during that time. This chart should be used when trying to keep track of a project while allocating an appropriate amount of time doing so. Gantt charts usually help organize ideas and are very visual. They do however lack the aspect of simplicity and tend to require more maintenance.
A network diagram focuses on specific steps of a plan by using the connections of the steps to map out a bigger picture or goal. Dooley(2021) describes a network diagram as being useful in the aspects of mapping out elements within the plan by dividing the task and assigning time frames to them (para. 2). They can be used in similar ways as the Gantt chart, but without the complexity. These charts excel in displaying project time estimation as well as determining progress completion for a task. This is important to users who are concerned with meeting a specific deadline and understanding if more time needs to be moved over to another task if needed. The drawbacks are they require more attention as they need to be updated often and can also be time consuming.
Lastly, PERT diagrams is used to schedule and organize task within a project as well, but uses a different type of graph that indicates the steps by nodes and arrows. Kopp stated "PERT charts are preferable to Ganatt charts because they identify task dependencies, but are often more difficult to interpret"(2020, para. 1). This quote emphasizes a potential benefit with this chart since the task are labeled in an order whereas Gantt charts lack this element. PERT charts are provide more benefits to those who want estimate the minimum amount of time needed for a project as well as pinpoint the amount of resources needed. The benefits are they are easy to understand visually and determine important directions of what to focus on. The drawback is they are simply more time consuming than other charts and also can be somewhat complex depending on the project.
The GERT chart seems to be the more valuable chart here for what is provided amongst the others especially for those who are more visual learners. The nodes and arrows used help viewers understand the steps and time needed for a specific task which the other charts don't do as well as this chart. Combining them would ultimately create more confusion for some as it would be rather difficult to just pull certain elements from one graph and use it elsewhere. It would be best to just use a specific graph that is more compatible with a specific task. g
