Geographic Location and Site: Top of Queenston Heights in Ontario, Canada
Appearance: The monument is built in a limestone wall. A 235- step spiral staircase up the column leads visitors to a small indoor underneath Brock's statue. This monument measures 56 metres (185 feet), and largest monument of it's kind in Canada and is composed of twigs, twine and dyed dollar stone feathers. It has a placard made of paper protected by a report cover.
Purpose: The purpose of this monument is to serve as a national historic site in Queenston Heights and also to give tribute to Major General Sir Isaac Brock, one of Canada's heroes of the war of 1812 that died during the the Battle of Queenston Heights.
Technology: Using the tools for stone carving and usage of limestone. In modern times they made an extensive restoration on the monument that improve relining the interior walls to protect against condensation. Usage of battery powered interior emergency lights to assist with exiting the monument and also if there is a power loss.
Duration and Longevity: First construction (16 years), Current monument up to this year: (167 years)
What makes this monument special?
This monument is special because it is now a Classified Federal Heritage Building because of it's historical associations, and it's architectural and environmental values. This monument is one of the best examples of a structure associated, through both it's symbolism and it's own history as a structure. And also, this monument became a tourist spot as they also established a small museum highlighting the early life of Major General Isaac Brock.
I believe that this monument is awe-inspiring because it establishes the historic character of Queenston Heights Park. It became a landmark of major importance, it dominates the Niagara escarpment. This monument was well known not just in Canada but also visitors from around the world come and visit here. It also valued excellent aesthetic design, this monument is an outstanding example of Neoclassical design. The monument column is one of the largest and most elaborate examples in Canada and also one of the tallest in the world, from there you can see the magnificent view towards Lake Ontario in the north and Niagara Falls in the South. It became one of the best examples of a structure associated, through both it's symbolism and it's own history as a structure.
