Module 1: Journal

Prompt:  Some traditions in China can be stretched back in time. They have been passed from generations to generations. Can you use one or two examples to illustrate the cultural continuities?

Expectations: Why do you think struck you most in the reading?  Is it confusing, inspiring, controversial or else? What do you think it means?  You can write about this in terms of thoughts and ideas (related to either this or other courses), or to things you read, or events in your life (or all of the above). Simple comments such as “I like / don’t like…” and “I agree with …” don’t count unless followed with substantial elaborations. The post should be about 100 words long excluding the quote(s). See attached rubric.

Module 2: Journal

Prompt:  Compare Confucianism and Daoism?. Do you agree or disagree with the following passage? Why or why not?

Confucius found it sour, much like he found the world full of degenerate people, and Buddha found it bitter, much like he found the world to be full of suffering. But Lao Tzu found the world sweet. This is telling, because Lao Tzu’s philosophy tends to look at the apparent discord in the world and see an underlying harmony guided by something called the ‘Dao’.?
