Dichotomy between micro and macro practice:

Micro system theories have its focus primarily on individuals. Macro system theories focus on the larger groups. Primarily the focus is on behaviors and interactions of a large community or the entire society. The macro approach focuses on improving the social and economic parts of individual’s lives. One example is the new policies that are being reviewed for human trafficking. Micro systems focus on the individual’s needs, problems, and strengths. It seems to also focus on how the individual handles and processes things. When applying the micro practice, the social worker is trying to assist the patient with coming up with the best plausible solutions and enhancing his or functionality.

How does micro practice dominate the social work profession?

It seems to be common practice for social workers to focus on the individual and their needs. The common focus here remains on the one-on-one affect that the social worker will have with the client. The main emphasis is to work on helping the person to change for their well-being. I believe that the micro practice appears to dominate the social work profession because of the simple fact that the main desire is to help the client identify and evaluate different avenues in order to come up with their best plan of action.

There are distinct differences between Macro and Micro practice. When working in macro practice a social worker is working large scale. Making policy changes and working to change the issues that effect more then just an individual client. They are working towards social justice and making things better for communities. Micro practice is working with individuals and helping them the build the skills to better their own lives. When working on the micro scale a social worker is finding community resources and working one on one with clients.

Micro practice dominates the social work profession because more often them not we are looking at how to help the individual and their family and not at the bigger picture. There are policies and laws that effect all our communities and if we want to make bugger changes we need to fix the policy not just the individual.
