What happens to LGBTQ seniors when they age out?

 

Aging and health issues facing LGBTQ seniors have often been ignored by research, policies and services. However, these LGBTQ seniors face higher rates of disability, physical and mental distress and a lack of access to services. According to an analysis conducted by a University of Washington researcher, prevention and intervention strategies must be developed to address the unique needs of LGBTQ seniors, whose numbers are expected to double to more than four million by 2030. LGBTQ seniors face unique circumstances, for example, fear of discrimination. Many LGBTQ seniors do not have children to assist them in older age. Senior housing, transportation, legal services, support groups and social events are the most commonly cited services needed in the LGBTQ community. LGBTQ seniors are generally an understudied and under-served population, yet, by 2060 their numbers will move past five million, and will account for more than 20 million older adults, including those who do not publicly self-identify but have engaged in same-sex sexual behavior, or romantic relationships, and/or are attracted to members of the same sex. LGBTQ seniors are also at higher risk for social isolation, putting them at greater risk of physical or mental and health problems, chronic conditions or premature death. Histories of discrimination and victimization because of sexual orientation or gender identity also contribute to poor health among LGBTQ seniors. In a nutshell, LGBTQ seniors experience multiple problems as they age out. These include disability, depression and loneliness. Also, LGBTQ seniors tend to be isolated as they age out. This puts them at greater risk of having physical and mental health problems, including chronic conditions and premature death. Lastly, as they age out, LGBTQ seniors are also prone to discrimination and victimization.
