Hawthorne uses many devices among which symbolism is the most dominant in the short story: Young Goodman Brown. Write a 3-4 page paper on the analysis and the interpretation of 4 of the symbols employed to construct this allegorical fantasy. This paper is expected to contain 3 parts: [the introduction],
[the analysis of the 4 symbols]
[the conclusion].
Length: 3 – 4 pages Format: Size 12 fonts. Spacing: Double
Part 1. [2paragraphs]The Introduction should contain 2 paragraphs: the synopsis and the biography of the author: Nathaniel Hawthorne. (Author, relevant dates, names of people and places). This section should begin with a grabber (or Hook). This is a strong concise statement of your appreciation of the allegory.
Part 2. [4 paragraphs]This section should contain at least 4 paragraphs with each one based on one symbol. Name the symbol and describe how it is used in the allegory. Also analyze each symbol in the context of the Puritan’s worldview of the mid 1800s and juxtapose that with a contemporary interpretation of that particular symbol in each body paragraph.
Part 3. [1 paragraph – at least]Conclude this paper with a succinct summary of both the introduction and the biography. Begin by restating your grabber (or hook) in other words. End by going on to summarize all the 4 symbols by restating their most salient points. The last sentence should operate like the hook by wrapping up with a powerful restatement of your opening grabber.
