King’s Essay “Why We Crave Horror Movies"
In “Why We Crave Horror Movies", Stephen King documents that everyone has a monstrous liking and inclining in their life. Horror movies to some individuals, allows them to splurge negativity without necessarily experiencing the consequences. Everyone possesses a dark internal desire that needs no response. It is rare for those urges to be awful, as displayed in horror movies. In the process, viewing the ugliest and awful urges in the film offers the audience a chance to purge their internal desire towards acting evilly. The emotions and pent-up thoughts are released harmlessly. In other words, harmful activities that seem inconsequential, such as watching horror movies, provide an avenue for the catharsis of detrimental pent-up emotions.
Negative emotions are not only universal, but they are also exemplary when individual experiences them. Although they cannot be suppressed, they need to be accepted and recognized. By accepting that not all pent-up thoughts that individual’s experiences are evil, it is easier to show appreciations and rewards showcasing of civilized emotions. Nonetheless, people are socialized from a young age to deal with negative emotions, which in the end makes the feeling to accumulate (King, 524). Yet, the person that accepts these emotions can effectively process destructive emotions. They can deal with them by watching a horror movie or reading a horrifying narrative. By accepting and realizing negative thoughts in controlled surroundings, it is possible to maintain emotional stability.
An action that seems inconsequential but beneficial offers viewers a chance to bond with others that have similar humanity. In essence, a person may feel ashamed of her or his beliefs, but engaging in such activities is comforting. Whatever urges, thoughts, or emotions they feel may not be as destructive as the terrors seen in the film. It reassures them that they are not among the worse in the society since their behaviors seem small relative to the horror activities they see on the screen. It makes them discover that the false are minute and that they are not different relative to others (King, 524). Consistent interaction with horrifying news can make an individual indeed believe that the horror film is happenings in real life. For instance, Eminem over the years has been a victim of several fake death tricks. According to Live About, the 2006 death hoax was only the second. It claimed that an illuminant clown had indeed replaced Eminem. Yet, this made people believe that he was indeed dead since conspiracy theorists even indicated that Eminem replacement looked younger. One twitter follower also suggested that the new Eminem had slightly different attributes which is an indicator of how people can use a horrifying experience to channel out their negative emotions.
From the loneliness of poverty and abuse, individuals can connect with real-life situations, which in the end, give them hope. Watching horror movies and documentaries on people living in debt seems to imply that everyone can overcome a particular trial (King, 524). In other words, negative situations such as poverty indicate that people can realize exemplary things if they collaborate and work together towards a shared objective.
Although Stephen King's essay is seen as a biased narrative, it is also appealing to emotion and population. The article makes individuals understand that even in their insanity; there is something positive they can do. He argues that all individuals make independent decisions to attend horror films and their urge to release the destructive nature and insanity through watching horrifying movies (Kirchhofer, 12). Some individuals have even used horrifying news for marketing reasons. For instance, For instance, International Business Times reports stated that the 2013 fake news about Eminem’s death was part of an online scam to lure users into engaging in an online survey. As a result, the narrative received traction on various social media platforms, which in the end forced one of the representatives from the Eminem team to confirm that the news was a fake. The theory also indicates that since the announcement of his death, there are also significant changes to this style of rap and crucial changes in some of the lyrics he is producing. Furthermore, some individuals have also noted that his dressing style has also changed, which is an indicator that he now emphasizes the representation of a darker hip-hop style (Kirchhofer, 12). Therefore, people can chose to use horror films or documentaries for beneficial reasons.
Another common happening in the modern society that makes people believe in spreading negative emotions and thoughts is what is known as the backfire effect. For instance, a death hoax went viral, claiming that Eminem is dead, the songwriter and rapper was believed to have lost his life after succumbing to injuries he sustained in a car crash. The hoax was indeed a false report and made shockwaves throughout social media. Although the news was fake, considering that it surfaced using a fake CNN logo, it made fans and celebrities to become worried about the welfare of the rapper which is evidence that people can channel a destructive event into a positive matter. To showcase their concern, several fans took to their different social media platforms to voice their worry and confusion. As a result, this reinforced Stephen King's ideology that indeed by watching negative news, movies and films can play a crucial role in making individuals realize that indeed they may not be worse than others. The images of Eminem succumbing to injuries, which eventually led to his demise, is a real example of a horrifying experience that made people increase their following, unite and release their emotions on twitter.
Furthermore, there was also another hoax that claimed that he had been stabbed four times in 2013 after engaging in a brawl or a scuffle in New York City. As the news of Eminem's demise continues to flourish, there have been growing images of Eminem alongside some of his recent photos hence giving people to have something to talk about (King, 524). In both pictures, there are configurations to his facial appearance, mainly because of his defined cheekbones. The new images present Eminem with a slimmer jaw and a lower hairline, something that has made conspiracy theorists believe that indeed Eminem died in 2006.
In conclusion, also though Stephen falsely offers relevant evidence and valid points that provide support to his arguments, his main discussions revolve around the positive feeling individuals develop after discovering that their insanity levels are not worse than what is shown by the monsters on the television. As such, Stephen King has played an instrumental role in making individuals believe that although some issues are inconsequential, they can be turned into positive lessons and inspire many to achieve great things.
