Assessing Genograms
McGoldrick termed the genogram as a starting point to get each member of the family to reconnect with their past and enable her to get through to that past which is relevant to solving the present problem. One of the main purposes included getting each person to see if their past families and members of the families had anything to do with the present situations they were trying to handle (DeMaria, Weeks & Holf, 2013). Further, she referred the genogram as helping to identify past occurrences with family members and how they could affect a person in their present lives (McGoldrick, 2003). McGoldrick also made it clear that the purpose of the therapy session was to take into account the biases that could present themselves amidst the genogram, make the family members realize the connection of the past with the present and most importantly take them through solving the difficult situations.
For her to engage each family member in the sessions, she brought out their respective significances to each other’s lives and showed how connected they were. She showed David how he was partially a cause of his daughter’s behavior by not fully being there for her when she needed him the most. She showed each family member how responsible they were for each other and made possible suggestions which in most cases turned out right, bringing about a level of confidence from the family members which was initially missing. To develop a clinical relationship between the genogram and the therapeutic sessions, she showed them how the members of their family have had a lot of impact on them. Further, she showed them how the effect of those family members could not be ignored and how they affect their present lives (Wright & Leahey, 2012). Out of these successful connections, she was able to bring out a clinical relationship that each family member could understand as well as approve.
