She Made Me Do It!

Diane is a high school junior. Although she is quite smart in school, she has struggled with fitting in and making friends since she started high school. Most of the girls in her high school tend to shy away from her since Diane would rather be found in the library than hanging out at the mall like everyone else on a Friday night.

This ongoing inward struggle has been progressively eating at Diane for quite some time. Discouraged by how she feels about herself, she doesn’t let anyone know, not even her parents. One Thursday afternoon out of the blue, Jan, a popular girl with whom Diane had never really talked before, strikes up a conversation with her. She asks Diane if she would be interested in going to a party at Dan’s house on Friday night. Dan is the quarterback for the high school football team. Dumbfounded, Diane readily and excitedly agrees to go to the party. Jan smiles and tells Diane that she will pick her up at 7:00 PM sharp on Saturday.

At the party, Diane immediately feels out of place and awkward. Everyone, including Jan, is drinking and several guys are out back by the pool smoking marijuana. Jan returns from the kitchen with two beers in her hand. She hands one to Diane. Reluctantly, Diane takes it and begins to drink. She hates the taste of it, but feels obligated to go along.

Before she knows it, she has had 3 or 4 and is really beginning to feel light-headed and queasy. About that time, Jan tells her the time and that they need to leave. When Diane returns home, her parents are waiting up for her, anxious to hear how everything went with her new friend. When they see Diane staggering up the sidewalk and trip on the front step, they become concerned.

When Diane walks through the door, they immediately smell alcohol on her breath and get angry. Diane becomes defensive. She tells her parents that she was only trying to fit in, she was tired of always feeling like the outcast at school, and not having any real friends. She says that she couldn’t help it and that Jan “made” her do it.
