In this assignment, you will combine all of the analytical and writing skills practiced throughout the first half of the semester in one succinct essay to demonstrate your ability to understand and critically assess an argument.

 

You will also exemplify your ability to work as part of a team; you will complete your Critical Analysis (20%) as a group. Please see “Groups” in Blackboard for details. Only one student per group need submit the assignment to Blackboard; on the APA cover page, please include the names of every student involved.

 

What are you doing?:

Your Critical Analysis (20%) submission should be approximately 3 double-spaced pages in which you analyze the quality of the author’s argument in ONE of the provided sources. This analysis must also include:

· An APA cover page

· APA formatting and citations throughout

· An APA reference page with a reference

 

What steps should you take to complete this assignment?:

1. Review material covered in class.

2. Read, and re-read, the provided articles.

3. Choose ONE of the articles.

· “Naming Ourselves” by Melanie Lefebvre

4. Review your previous assignments and, if necessary, seek clarification on any feedback on areas for improvement.

5. Complete the in-class exercises designed to help generate ideas and assess examples.

How should your assignment be organized?:

All assignments should have an APA cover page attached to the front, and a reference page attached to the back.

 

Please organize the body of your analysis in the pattern explained below. Each main body paragraph should follow the organization discussed in class. Please see the skills listed, and the rubric, for expectations.

 

Your analysis must contain:

· An APA cover page

· APA formatting

· An APA reference and reference page

· Six specific quotes or paraphrases from the source

· An analysis of the author’s use of rhetoric, evidence, AND language/tone.

 

Organization: Analyzing by Analytical Modes

Paragraph 1 // Introduction: Introduces the article, summarizes the main argument and main claims of the article, and provides your thesis statement about the article.

Paragraph 2 // Rhetoric: Analyzes the author’s use of rhetorical strategies.

Paragraph 3 // Evidence: Analyzes the author’s use of evidence.

Paragraph 4 // Language & Tone: Analyzes the author’s use of language.

Paragraph 5 // Conclusion: Provides an overall assessment on the quality of the author’s argument and summarizes your points.
