A 5 month old male infant brought in by mother who says that the infant has been coughing and is having trouble breathing. The infant has had a runny nose and felt warm to touch for the past 2-3 days. Today the cough and breathing have worsened. He won't take his bottle and he has spit up twice. No diarrhea. The infant has not had any other illnesses and is UTD on immunizations. The temp is 100.8 R, pulse 142, respirations 62. SaO2 93-94%. The baby is tachypneic with intercostal retractions noted. Auscultation reveals diffuse crackles and expiratory wheezing. The baby is awake and interactive. Mucous membranes are moist. Peripheral pulses palpable with good capillary refill. The chest X-ray shows over-inflation and patchy perihilar infiltrates.
