Assignment A: Reading Lessons

Teaching Situation:

  • You are working in a language school in a Spanish-speaking country. The students are monolingual.
  • You teach a number of different groups, and you are planning next week's reading lessons for your elementary, lower intermediate and strong upper intermediate classes.
  • In all three classes, the students get on well with each other and are happy to work together.
  • Your line manager has selected a text for each group, which you must use, but you are going to design your own materials and tasks to exploit them.
  • The lessons are one hour long.
  • For each lesson, you would follow the standard comprehension lesson procedure described in Unit 5, Part 2:
    1. Lead into topic (warmer)
    2. Vocabulary pre-teaching
    3. First reading
    4. Second reading
    5. Follow on activity (communicative speaking task)
  • For each text, you need to plan only the part of the lesson specified in the instructions.

Assignment Instructions:

  • At the top of each template is the class description and the reading text.
  • You do not need to provide a full lesson plan for any of the lessons.
  • Below each text, there are two or three sections for you to complete, each focusing on one or two stages of the lesson.
  • Read 'Advice on Approaching Assignment A' before you begin.
  • The checklist and 'How Assignment A will be Assessed' show what you need to include and what the marker will be looking at.
  • Submit your assignment on the templates provided – other formats will not be accepted.
  • You must complete and submit all FOUR templates.
