DISCUSSION 1 Building Communication and Collaboration Skills Communication forms the foundation of collaboration within healthcare settings. Collaboration is especially important in healthcare since the overall result is the provision of superlative patient care (Masters, 2020). Personally, one of the ways in which I improve my awareness of my communication skills within the professional setting is trying to ask for feedback from my colleagues. For example, there have been instances where I believed I was being very polite but feedback from my colleagues showed that I came across as rude or brusque. Feedback from my colleagues has been very beneficial in helping me become better at communicating. Constant practice is also beneficial for example, practicing writing has helped me to improve my ability to communicate through writing. Interprofessional collaboration to improve patient outcomes is dependent on our professional communication skills. One of the most effective communication skills that nurses bring to collaborative interactions is offering feedback from patients to aid the provision of care. Additionally, a recognition of other’s work aids in improving communication and team dynamics because people feel valued (Gausvik, 2015). Mutual respect is also beneficial because when people feel respected, they are much more likely to collaboration. All those factors are important in my practice because they have a positive impact on patient care and outcomes. DISCUSSION 2 Professional Communication Skills Currently, I am working at a Covid-19 testing site. I encounter patients from various cultures and backgrounds where a language barrier can result in ineffective communication. Cultural competence in nurses is essential to ensuring a high level of care is given to all people. My organization requires regular mandatory online as well as in-person in-services to ensure nurses are equipped to care for people from various backgrounds and can communicate effectively with them. According to Loftin et al (2013), “caring for racially and ethnically diverse populations requires the need for cultural competence training and educational training programs.” Where I work, we also use an electronic device with a live translator to ensure the patient receives clear and concise information regarding their visit. Having this device on hand enables the process to flow smoothly thereby decreasing stress and anxiety within the patient. “Adapting education and communication based on the patient's preference is a foundation of patientcentered communication” (Masters, 2020, p.268). I feel clear and concise communication is the most effective way of communicating when it comes to collaborating with healthcare providers. I think of how crucial effective communication among healthcare providers is during a critical event. This can determine how negative or positive the outcome will be for the patient. “Communication influences health outcomes such as health status, adherence, and satisfaction” (Ang et al, 2013). At my previous facility, poor communication during hand-off led to a delay in patient care which resulted in the patient feeling neglected. Thankfully it did not result in a serious event for the patient.

I fully agree with your argument that communication is the foundation for collaboration in a healthcare setting. It is also true that asking for feedback helps a nurse or any healthcare provider to improve his/her communication skills. Other skills such as interprofessional collaboration and mutual respect are important in improving an individual’s communication skills. I would also recommend that it is very essential for healthcare providers to have the listening skill as it plays a major role in improving one’s communication skill especially in the healthcare setup. Listening is a two-way activity between both the speaker and the listener and thus an essential element for collaboration.

I concur with your claim that cultural competence is an essential element for nurses or healthcare providers because it enables one to collaborate with people from various backgrounds effectively without any communication barrier. It is also important to have translators in the healthcare setup to ensure that patient receives the required information regarding their visits in a clear and concise manner. I would also recommend that it is essential for nurses to be good listeners and to have mutual respect as these are very essential elements of collaborating with patients in the healthcare setup to ensure effective communication. It is also important to encourage feedbacks as this is a way of improving one’s awareness of his/her communication skills.
