The country that fascinates me the most on the list is Russia. Russian culture is much like the U.S., in the aspect that they are orientated towards the past and present and they promote respect for tradition and for fulfilling social obligations (Noe, Hollenbeck, Gerhart & Wright, 2019). However, where they are different is that people in Russia are a little more formal and reserved, more serious and casual behavior is considered a sign of disrespect. The Russian business culture retains many of the characteristics that were instilled during the Soviet era, which are most noticeably an autocratic management style. Therefore, in Russia managers are able to make decisions unilaterally and the employees don’t often inquire about the consent, but rather just do whatever they feel is necessary in order to achieve goals. In the United States employees follow a more open and collaborative practice in business. Russian companies follow a stricter, more clearly define hierarchy than American businesses. In Russia, business people place a greater emphasis on the spoken word than do professionals in the United States. While Americans do much of their business via written communication such as email, letters, or fax, Russians prefer to hear things directly from people they trust. Face-to-face meetings are usually more productive than written correspondence because they allow people to more fully discuss and explain issues.
