            A recent article on the use of private security in certain affluent San Francisco neighborhoods brings attention to the alternative methods being used by the wealthy to protect their neighborhoods (Colton, 2021). Failed public policies, marginalized police officers, and political movements to defund the police have created the environment for crime to thrive and private security to become viable option for personal protection in the absence of law enforcement.

The current reported 2021 crime data from San Francisco’s Police Department shows increases in Larceny Theft (9.6%), Assault (7.8%), Human Trafficking-Sex Act (25%), Arson (9.6%), and Homicide (7.3%) (Crime Dashboard, 2021). The data shows an increase in almost all of the violent and property crimes listed under Part I, which could be the cause for some of the social elites to require additional protection.

Massive increases in crime have plagued major metropolitan areas throughout the country. This increase could be attributed to pandemic economic factors that affected impoverished areas.  Another potential cause is the failed polices of politicians, who promise to “reimagine” policing by encouraging public defunding of police resources.  In 2020, San Francisco Mayor London Breed cut the police budget by over $120 million so that the funds could be redirected to “addressing disparities in the Black community” (Martichoux & Barnard, 2020). Another possible cause are prosecutors who refuse to prosecute certain crimes due to political calls for racial equity or quality-of-life issues (Grimes, 2020). Police officer turnover in the form of retirement, quitting, or getting fired for non-compliance with vaccine mandates have created a nationwide shortage in qualified law enforcement officers.  Simply put, all these conditions exist in San Francisco and are collectively the root causes of massive increases in criminal deviance.

Today once again we have experienced another devastating shooting.  At 1:50 pm the police received a call that an unidentified white male dressed in all black and carrying multiple guns was at the town local mall in Boise Idaho shooting at innocent people.  As a result, two people were killed and four were injured.  Upon arrival at the mall the police saw the alleged suspect leaving the mall, a gun fight ensued and the gunman was shot and killed.  The suspect was identified as Jacob Bergquist, a 27-year-old Boise man.  Mr. Bergquist was known to the police for various misdemeanor offenses such as disorderly conduct and trespassing, nothing that warranted an arrest.  At this time all local, state and federal agencies are trying to ascertain what was the motive of the shooter, they are combing through all of his personal belongings and talking to his neighbors for answers (aol news 2021).  

The main issue that we face today is the gun issue, which is deeply ingrained in our society and is always an explosive topic, especially after we experience another shooting.  Many advocates call for gun legislation that will help to control and reduce the violence caused by guns.  President Biden is aware of this public health epidemic and is taking actions to reduce all forms of gun violence (Whitehouse 2021).  Currently the President has called for Congress to pass two bills to close loop holes in the back ground check system, by banning assault weapons and high capacity magazines.  Hopefully, this will be the start of the President’s initiative plan to reduce gun violence in our society.
