It is very important that you read the entire set of instructions before diving into this assignment.

 

Formatting Instructions for Text on Both your slides

· Use full sentences with proper grammar, spelling, and sentence structure

· Proofread your work.

· In all your answers, be specific to each individual image. In all of your descriptions

· Refer to the Principle of Design by name

· Refer to the full and appropriate Basic Formal elements terms. For example, if you are discussing line, tell me what kind of line (line of sight, contour, directional, etc.). If you are discussing color what kind of color? Saturated, desaturated, tint, tone, hue, shade, hue? Red, blue, etc. Don’t be vague, be clear and specific

· Provide clear, descriptive details from the photograph, such as where and what is creating a directional line or wearing a red hue, etc.

 

Examples of how to write about the Principles of Design are included with the photograph instructions. Please adhere to them when constructing your own statements.

 

General Instructions

· You are going to take two photographs of the same person or animal. DO NOT HAVE ANOTHER PERSON TAKE THE PHOTOGRAPHS OF YOU.

· DO NOT DIGITALLY MANIPULATE OR PHOTOSHOP ANY ASPECT OF THE PHOTO.

· Each of the two photographs and their required text have their own set of instructions, which are found on the next couple of pages.

· Each photo will be in a different location – such as a different room in your house, different area outside of the house or elsewhere. (Be safe, wear ppe if going outside the home

· Both the photographs and required text for each one will be placed in a Power Point (do not send other kinds of files, only accepted as a PowerPoint)

· Use multiple slides per photograph so as to avoid crowding the text.

· The background of the PowerPoint must be light grey – no other color!

· Include a title slide with your name, the date, and the title of your PowerPoint

· Save PowerPoint file as Your First and Last Name Visual Communications.ppt or pptx

Submission

When the assignment is complete, attach PowerPoint to the Signature Assignment Visual Communications submission portal (don’t submit via Blackboard Message or Email !!!)

DON’T SETTLE ON THE FIRST TWO PHOTOS YOU TAKE, TAKE SEVERAL AND CHOSE THE BEST ONES. Even professional photographers take multiple images and then narrow those down to the best.

Photograph One Instructions

When you take the photograph, incorporate all of the following into the composition of the image, and into the text.

Composition: Asymmetrical balance: In your text, you will:

a. Describe how the two sides of the image are not symmetrically balanced.

For example, in the image on the right, the man on the left is tall, and has no counterpart with the same positioning or same amount of visual weight on the right. On the right is the shorter seated boy and the taller column, which in no way resemble the visual weight on the left side.

b. Draw a diagonal line on the image that demonstrates the diagonal alignment of figures and objects, and then describe this diagonal alignment. Make sure this line actually aligns with figures and objects in the image.

The diagonal line I drew starts on the upper left, aligns with the man’s hat, the boy’s raised arm, and the right edge of the cinder block on the right.

c. Find a basic formal element that repeats throughout the entire image, and describe where this basic element is found throughout the image.

For example in the image above, square and rectangular shapes repeat throughout the entire image. These are found in the door, its panels, on the steps, the walls, the column and the concrete cinderblocks below the column.

Include and describe three design decisions that create unity (Chapter 7 Part 5 for list)

In the case of this image, unity is created through the use of:

· Brown and brown shades and tones that run across the background of the picture, , including the door and wall;

· A repetition of square shapes, including the door fame and panels, wall, column, steps, and cider blocks;

· A repetition of directional lines. For example, the steps create directional lines that lead from the boy to the man. The panel to the left of the man creates a directional line to his hat. The doorframe on the right creates a directional line that leads to the boy. The column creates two directional lines on either side that lead directly to the cinderblock below it.

Describe and include two examples of basic formal elements that create variety, and explain how these basic formal elements different from those that found in a greater abundance.

For example

· While there are many dark values (the browns, blacks, and grays found on the pants, door, steps, walls, columns and cinderblocks), there are very few light values, which are found on both people’s shirts and the man’s hat.

· While there are many directional lines, as mentioned previously, there are only two lines of sight created when the man look’s at the boy and the boy looks at us.

Describe who the focal point is, and include and describe two ways the basic formal elements have been manipulated to emphasize the focal point

The boy seated on the steps is the focal point. The boy creates a line of sight toward us, which makes us look at the boy, emphasizing him as the focal point. The right side of the doorframe leads directly creating a directional line to the boy emphasizing him as the focal point. Even though the man is taller than the boy is, the man creates a line of sight to the boy when he looks at him, and his bent elbow creates an implied line toward the boy, making us look at him, emphasizing him as the focal point.

Text: When you re describing your image

a. Describe the symmetry of the two halves of the image – what is alike or mirror reflections of one another

For example in this image, the girl is placed in the center of the image; the railing of the ferry appears in the same position on both the left and the right side; the sky and the ocean are also equal on either side of the center.

b. Describe the slight discrepancy of the two halves that make them different from one another.

While the railing on the left and right are in the same position, the railing on the left has many more horizontally placed bars (8), while the railing on the right only has two.

Blue tints, tones, and shades repeat throughout this entire picture.

The repetition of the blue tints, tones, and shades creates a rhythm that my eyes can follow throughout the entire image.

These can be found in the dark blue shade and blue hue on the girl’s sweater, the light blue tint on the railings, and in the clouds in the sky, and in the bluish tone of the ocean behind the girl.

3. Include and describe two full examples of Comparative Proportion

Pick two from the list below– Make sure to include clear, descriptive details, and chose two examples from the list below:

a. Size - Two of the same kind of basic formal elements in terms of size

For example to the right of the girl, the two horizontal bars create directional lines to the girl. Comparatively the directional line of the top bar is longer in size than the directional line of the lower bar. (Notice I compared directional lines to directional lines)

 

 

b. Quantity - Two somewhat similar basic formal elements in terms of quantity

For example, while there are 12 directional lines in the image (9 horizontal and 3 vertical bars), comparatively there are only two implied lines created by the curved bars on the right, which lead to the bar below them. Notice that while I am still comparing lines, I am comparing two different types of lines (implied and directional.

c. Relative Value- Compare two adjacent areas in terms of relative value. Remember that adjacent means directly next to one another.

For example, the girl’s dark blue shaded sweater is comparatively much darker in relative value than her very light valued red tinted (pink) skin.

d. The use of desaturated colors (tints, tones, shades and browns) as compared to the use of saturated hues (hues on the color wheel) – Are there more desaturated colors than saturated hues or vice versa- be sure to describe the names of these and where they are found in the image.

For example, while there are many desaturated colors in the picture (the blue tints and tones in the sky, the blue tones in the sea, the light blue tints on the ferry’s bars, the dark blue shades within the shadows of the sweater, the reddish tints of the girl’s skin, and the yellow tint of her hair), comparatively there is very little use of saturated hues (the blue hue of her sweater).

e. You can also compare the use of pattern to solid colors, texture vs. smooth, etc.

For example, the visual texture of the fluffy clouds in the sky as compared to the cold, smooth texture of the ferry bars behind the girl.
