Which theory do you believe explains most crime? Provide a brief summary of the theory in your response. Why did you select this theory?

ANSWER THE ABOVE QUESTION. THEN REPLY TO MY CLASSMATE’S POST ON WHY YOU AGREE WITH HIS POST?

As far as crime and theory, this is an interesting topic, but theory is a difficult approach for me to grasp, so I will give it my best shot. I believe the Rational Choice theory is the best theory that describes crime and criminal activity. Rational Choice Theory can be associated with about any decision, but it makes perfect sense within the criminal justice system. With the Rational Choice Theory, a person decides based on a cost/reward or benefit/risk mindset. An offender weighs the risk/reward and decides based off that. If the reward is substantial enough then it would be them risking injury, getting caught or any other negative effect. With the Rational Choice Theory, the best means of deterrence is stiffer fines and penalties to make the risk greater than the reward. I chose this theory because it is widely used and the most recognized and obvious within the law enforcement side. Offenders are constantly weighing the risk/reward when contemplating a crime or criminal activity. This theory is by far the most obvious.
