What is the difference between inductive and deductive reasoning?

            When researching, different methods apply, and they vary depending on the objective that research seeks to accomplish. Zalaghi and Khazaei (2016) explained that inductive and deductive reasoning in research methods take different perspectives where one focuses on developing a theory whereas the other tests an existing theory, respectively. In other words, inductive reasoning makes a broad generalization from specific observations, whereas deductive reasoning is a form of basic reasoning.

What is similar between inductive and deductive reasoning?

           Although they take significantly different approaches in achieving their objective, the similarity lies in how they both conclude their findings. Zalaghi and Khazaei (2016) further highlight that the conclusions of these two research methods can be proven to be valid even when the argument and the premise of these research methods are solid and accurate. Their similarities lie in how they take their findings which can be proven to be incorrect even when the premise is strong.

Are there situations where both inductive and deductive reasoning may arrive at a similar conclusion?

           Although they differ in the approach taken to conclude the findings, their nature proves that the paths to the findings may be different. However, the findings have some significant similarities in most situations. They take different approaches but arrive at a common conclusion driven by the need to validate a statement by taking either a broad perspective of a subject matter or the other way around.

Which form of reasoning is more scientific, and under what situation is each form of reasoning more appropriate?

           The most scientific approach is the deductive research approach since it bases its research on the available theories and seeks to validate its findings. The research method focuses on formulating a hypothesis based on an existing theory, collecting data to test the theory, and analyzing the findings that either support or reject the hypothesis. It then makes room for validation of these theories and proves to be a scientific approach.
