Catheter-associated urinary tract infection is the most common form of infection in hospitals. Research shows that in the U.S, it causes approximately 13000 deaths annually. Due to this reason, the centers for disease control and prevention and the infectious Diseases Society of America updated their guidelines for preventing CAUTI.AMC project team joined in a collaborative effort and support towards eliminating CAUTI in healthcare.

The multidisciplinary team's effort to eliminate CAUTI involves continued medical education that includes conferences that address CAUTI prevention measures—developing education programs for healthcare professionals advising on the importance of reducing the use of urinary catheters. This will help minimize the rate of urinary tract infection.

Due to the complexity of health needs today, there is a need to involve more than one discipline when addressing the issue. According to the Institute of Medicine Committee on Quality of Health Care in America, health care providers should work in an interprofessional team to best address the challenge. Interprofessional education about urinary tract infection helps the student for future interprofessional groups when faced with a similar challenge. This approach indicates respect and positive attitudes among the team members as they focus on improving the patient's outcomes and the situation. Interprofessional collaboration is a shared decision making associated with health. The collaborative practice factors include accountability, communication, coordination, responsibility, mutual respect, and autonomy.

Studies show that healthcare professionals can apply evidence-based knowledge into practice and nursing intervention successfully reduces the prevalence of unnecessary usage of IUC in hospitalized patients. Nursing education on strategies to prevent CAUTI has significant improvement in patients outcomes. Therefore, effort should be put into promoting nursing interventions through educating healthcare providers on recommending best practice guidelines and advocacy for their hospitalized patients.

According to studies, there is diversity in undergraduate education experience and nursing-job training relating to catheter management practices. It also noted that the quality of current catheter care practices uses collaborative strategy, and it's affected by nurses' process and gender. Training of nursing staff on decreasing use of catheters also changed their attitude and about catheter management.

Some of the proposed measures to prevent urinary tract infection include improving hand hygiene, improving catheter use, which would require nurses to avoid prolonged use of catheter without changing it especially in emergency wards, management of incontinence without catheters, which would require nurses to improve on their quality of care and allocate more time to these patients that would necessarily require the use of a catheter. The nurses would also be necessary to educate patients on hygiene matters when handling catheters and other UTI measures.
