Your organization is a floral supply company with employees in the following jurisdictions:

1)Manitoba

2)Prince Edward Island

3)Yukon

The organization is planning to implement a company-wide policy with respect to vacation leave and vacation pay that provides the same benefits to all employees, regardless of their province of employment. As the Payroll Supervisor, provide Cheryl Mark, the Director of Finance, with the following information:

1)Identify four specific items relating to vacation leave and vacation pay that will have to be addressed in the policy to ensure compliance with the employment/labour standards in each jurisdiction.

Research the details for each of the items you have identified using the course material and the employment/labour standards website for each jurisdiction.

2)Using the results of your research, provide your recommendations to Ms. Mark on how to address each of these items in the policy to provide the employees with the best benefit, while keeping the cost to the organization at a minimum. Explain your reasoning

Manitoba Jurisdiction.

1)Employees must receive at least two weeks of vacation after each of the first four years of employment. After completing 5 years of work with the same employer, employees must receive a minimum of 3 weeks of vacation.

2)Vacation pay is calculated based on the gross earnings in the previous year. Employees who are entitled to two weeks of vacation receive 4% of their gross wages as vacation pay and employees with three weeks' vacation receive 6%.

3)Employers can, and often do, give employees more vacation than is required by law.

4)Employers decide when vacation pay is to be paid. However, it must be paid no later than the last day of work before the vacation and within 10 months of earning it.

Prince Edward Island

1)If an employee is employed by the same employer for less than eight years, the Employment Standards Act says that employers must give every employee a vacation of two weeks after each 12 months of work and within the following four months.

2)An employer must tell the employee of his/her vacation at least one week before it begins.

3)An employee who works for an employer for 12 continuous months and, during that time, works for less than 90 per cent of the employer's normal working hours can request vacation pay only instead of vacation time.

4)An employer can include vacation pay in an employee's hourly rate, which would be paid in every pay cheque.

Yukon

  1. The Act states that all employees are entitled to vacation pay and vacation time except members of the employer's family.
  2. An employer must start paying vacation pay after the employee has been continuously employed for 14 days
  3. Vacation pay is calculated as at least 4% of an employee's gross wages. Vacation time is calculated as at least 2 weeks for every year of completed work.
  4. If an employee's employment is terminated before a year is completed, the employer must pay the employee all their earned vacation pay within seven days from the date the employment ended.

My recommendation on how they would provide the employees with the best benefit, while keeping the cost to the organization at a minimum would be to motivate their employees to work hard. With the prospect of such vacation time and pay employees feel motivated to work hard to be able to enjoy those luxuries. When employees are motivated, this increases their work efficiency which increases company revenue and thus leading to more profits.More profits means that the company can cater for the vacation time and vacation pay for it's employees without putting financial pressure on the company.
