Importance of Becoming a Global Citizen

Globalism refers to the thinking of treating the entire world as a place for political and economic influence while in comparison, globalization refers to when businesses and organizations spread their influence internationally to work with many different kinds of people around the world (Papastephanou, 2005). Globalization is also known as the expansion of a country’s resources. Through globalization, this influence can lead to changes in governmental systems in different countries and policy reforms which could lead to helping others live a better life. It can also bring about manipulation and power over another country. As seen in the video, however, some countries do not want to be globalized because they believe their country should be separate from any other country, as they take pride in their differences and do not see a need for change in their country (Globalization, n.d.).

Within my own life, being a global citizen means many important things. For one, it brings access to multiple technologies and inventions for students and citizens which connects them to other places around the world. Because of technology, people are more aware and better connected with others from different countries (Papastephanou, 2005). Through increasing technology, a person can become more globalized as they discover new things about other countries and the people who live there, increasing their sense of knowledge about other cultures. Having access to different technologies and seeing how the world is inventing more advanced technology gets me excited for the future because it may present more opportunities for me to become connected with people from around the world. It is great how so many countries now have access to smartphones, computers, and tablets which gives them the opportunity to learn about other people from different countries as well. In this case, technology makes globalization easier to conduct.

There have been some disagreements present between theorists about what the correct definition of global citizenship is. One article logically claimed that the reason for this lies in the fact that there is some confusion over the term global citizenship given the many different perspectives about it around the world, such as political and educational perspectives (Reysen & Katzarska-Miller, 2013). This could lead to multiple definitions since there are many areas in which the term global citizens could apply. Personally, global citizenship can be defined as when a person develops an overall understanding for good values in other people around the world while working together with others to sustain and uphold human rights. It is more of a collective endeavor and requires respect, understanding, peace, and honor.

Two important outcomes of global citizenship are intergroup empathy and social justice. Intergroup empathy is known as the ability for someone to view another person’s perspective from their point of view (Reysen & Katzarska-Miller, 2013). Care and empathy occur when a person thinks of others first and what situation they are in, even when from different countries. This is important because without empathy, there is a lack of care for others and their well-being, not just within a person’s own country, but countries different from their own. Genuine human connection and respect cannot be attained if intergroup empathy is not achieved. Similarly, social justice refers to having concerns about human rights and seeking fair treatment of others despite who they are (Reysen & Katzarska-Miller, 2013). This could include providing services that bring food, water, healthcare, and legal assistance to those who need it or are prevented from having basic human needs. Social justice is an important outcome of global citizenship and should always be pursued given that all humans deserve equal treatment and respect from others, regardless of their race, sex, age, gender, or background.

This past summer, I participated in Black Lives Matter protests to promote social justice for black individuals that undergo police brutality and mistreatment. It is important for all people in this world to have their basic rights protected from harm. I felt like I was being a good global citizen because I was participating in bettering the lives of a certain group of people who are still heavily oppressed, even in the United States. Additionally, I also have participated in having more intergroup empathy for others through participating in those protests because even though I am not black, I was given an awareness of the struggles that this group of people goes through. I was also made aware of the hundreds of thousands of people around the world who are also suffering from discrimination and racial harassment. As a global citizen, it is my job to protect the freedoms and rights of others despite their skin color or gender. These should not be distinguishing factors in who gets certain freedoms and who does not.
