UI Elements of Mobile App Interface

According to Kuznetsov, Gorla, & Zeller (2018), in mobile app design, UI refers to the user interface which is simply any aspect of the app that the user can see and interact with when using the app. Different operating systems such as android provide various pre-built components in the form of UI controls and structured controls to enable one to create a desired UI when creating an app. Thus, a user interface is vital in making it easy for the user to enjoy and have an interactive moment with the app through the use of aspects such as blocks, menus, checkboxes, control buttons, and elements (Kuznetsov et al. 2018). In this paper I define and discuss the various UI elements in the design of a mobile app interface that make it more user friendly. 

  1. UI Font

UI font refers to the user interface aspect that provides access to font characteristics within the app (Lu, & Chen, 2012). Also, through a UI provides access to glyph information that used in design layout. Font design in mobile apps can be done through scaling of fonts automatically or through creating a self-sizing table view cells. Custom fonts can also be added to an app and a UI font descriptor used to define a collection of attributes that describe the specific font. Simmilar to other elements in app design, fonts play a vital role in user experience. Notably, some apps are better than others when used in a mobile app. For instance, an app that displays well on a computer screen but fails to scale down properly when used on a mobile app, is deemed inappropriate for a mobile user experience. Mobile users are expected to a bad experience with such a font and consequently the app as a whole. Robot font been chosen by google as the best font in its android phones making it a priority choice for mobile app designers.

 

  1. UI Accelerator

A UI accelerator can also be referred to as a shortcut. UI accelerators are used to enhance user interfaces through the provision of an alternative faster but a more demanding method when using an app. The alternative is usually more demanding because a higher memory or a more complex gesture of the device used is required to accomplish a specific task. Through accelerators, an app is made more flexible and efficient (Lu, & Chen, 2012).

  1. Menu Controller

A menu controller makes it to control a menu through display, enabling or toggling of the menu. A user of a mobile app should have a choice to close the menu in a specified manner without interfering with other open apps. The user should also be able to enable or disable a menu especially in case where there are several menus; enabling one menu closes the other menus on the app. Other common menus include the geMenus, get, isEnabled, and swipeGesture, among others (Lu, & Chen, 2012)..

  1. Navigation Item

Navigation items are the tools used by the user to access the different areas of the menu. Thus, navigation items can include buttons, switches, swipe gestures, menus, tabs, links and different fields. App developers have long used either the sticky or fixed menu which enables the user to scroll down using the navigation items without the menu disappearing.

  1. UI Screen

Basically, a user interface is made up of several visual elements or pages that make various screens. The UI screen implies the display of the app where the various elements of the UI are displayed. Scroll buttons, menus and other aspects of navigation are all displayed on the screen and their appearance determines the user experience.

  1. UI Responder

A UI responder implies the abstract aspect of the user interface that responds to handling events. In this case, Kuznetsov et al. (2018) asserts, events include touch, motion, remote control or pressing. Thus, a UI responder is designed to override the corresponding event and offer an instant response to the user. The responder uses the information obtained from a specific event and updates the user appropriately and such accuracy is vital in increasing the friendliness of the app.

  1. UI Text Position

A UI text position or alignment refers to hidden background processes that are used by the app designer to manipulate and position foreground active elements in the UI, Text position is considered a simple UI element is simple yet very powerful in achieving the desired user experience. Through the UI text position or alignment, the displayed words or content gains increased readability and presentability making an ap more appealing to the user (Kuznetsov et al. 2018).

  1. UI Gesture Recognizer

Degott & Zeller (2019) describe a UI gesture recognizer is the element that decodes the logic of a sequence of events of touch or motion, referred to as the input, and initiates the UI responder to interpret accordingly. The action of the UI gesture can be summarized as the process of recognition of events by the user. Similar to the text position, and the UI responder, the UI gesture recognizer are not visible but yet very powerful to the user.

From the preceding and as discussed by Degott & Zeller (2019), all the elements used in a UI should make the most possible sense to the user in the whole time of interaction with the app. Also, the various elements of the app should be inseparable from each other and readily recognizable with the brand, business or institution the app represents. Thus, it is the role of the designer of a mobile app to anticipate the actions and desires of the user when using the app and ensure that the UI elements used fully support those actions in a straight forward and most importantly enjoyable manner. UI design is closely related to UX or user experience. While on the one hand user experience presents the analytical and logical side of the design, on the other hand, UI presents the visual side. Both UX and UI combine to make the best environment for users.
